Institutional Projects: MFBM Sala  | MFBM Ordination Hall  | MFBM Dormitory  | MFBM Kutti

MFBM ORL
Escondido, Californa 1999. In this investigation for the Metta Forest Buddhist Monastery, the sacred and secular spaces of the project are defined not only in use, but in their construction ethos. The MFBM required a meditation hall (sala), ordination hall, dining hall, prototype monk's cabins (kutti), office with reception and library (orl), and a dormitory for lay persons. The religious/ sacred buildings are designed with 'natural' materials, the secular buildings are designed with modern industrial products like steel, glass, and concrete, while the mix use buildings that are programatically larger and more complex are a mixture of materials. The pedestrian paths/ access roads/ parking/ and open spaces have the same strategy of construction type and materiality applied throughout the site.  [Click to close image].
