ERDManhattan, New York 2000. The San Remo Apartments
on Central Park West by Emory Roth was the first residential building with two
towers in 1930. The logic of the twin tower affords twice the number of apartments
with 360-degree views and windows on the park. The genetic engineering of the
building enhances its very desirability. The study of historic New York City
building types and a comparative look at the biological muscular development
of lobster claws provide an interesting point of departure for a speculative
new combination of luxury tower with the multiple level town house. The bifurcation
of programs is evident in the form. The traditional skyscraper lifestyle is
distributed vertically in one wing, while another arm develops horizontally
with an internal vehicular circuit providing direct access to private garages
of town house units, forming a new hybrid building typology. [Click
