Groenhoek
Brooklyn, New York 2004. The industrial nature of Groenhoek does not diminish the quality of the place. It is its identity. Rather than denying this, the strategy is to re-use and re-work the site’s logic, registering the environment and the user. The boathouse program is distributed across the existing site to take advantage of its OPPORTUNISTIC scale. The boathouse and the landscape are integrated and seen as one element. It is a constructed model of water in concrete and steel, and the existing site/factory building the metaphorical land. The entire complex serves as an educational model that demonstrates the natural process of tides and ebbs, while providing a venue for canoe/kayak lessons and the art of boat construction. The proposal achieves a complex but cohesive relationship with the existing environment and future programs. In collaboration with Two-n.
